Here’s an example (names & data changed)

James Robert Sutherland, mothers maiden name Smith Vol 19 Page 1234
James Robert White mothers maiden name Smith Vol 19 Page 1234

What’s happened here is that James Robert’s mother Jane (maiden name Smith) was still married to Mr Sutherland when he was born.
As it happens, James Robert’s biological father attended the registration, so his name was included.

The BC would read
Name- James Robert
Father’s name Edward WHITE
Mothers name Jane SUTHERLAND formally SMITH
So the INDEX, reflects all three surnames written on the BC.

As you were married at the time, both your married and maiden name would be recorded. He hasn't been re-registered by your Ex - the *index* reflects both the names you used. There is only the one original BC.

My son has two birth certificates ...one I registerd in my maiden name and his surname was my maiden name, as I was just getting a divorce from a two year separation.
Then when I was looking today I saw he was registerd in my X husbands surname although he is not the father ...it also put me on the certificate using my maiden name
Dob is the same and registration is the same quarter
How can he have being re registerd with me or his father doing this ...

children often are indexed in multiple surnames now because you don't give your child a surname when you register them only forenames are given, so a child's surnames in the index come from the parents recorded surnames on the certificate. Handy really as my cousins children have 3 surnames in Law but they use dad's name, if they want / need to they can use one of the others leagally but would have to inform the bank etc that they are ususing an alternative surname.

But why do they do that though ? For what reasons would this be ? Tina

Now adays a child is registered in all the parents surnames. e.g. my cousin was re-registered after her parents married, her children are now indexed with 3 different surnames (grandma'smaiden name, grandpa's name and dad's name) although friends (3 siblings) of mine are registered 10 times between them, the eldest is registered 3 times and the younger 2 are registered 4 times (mum had a double barraled surname so kids registered in the double name, first part of double name, second part of double name and dad's name.

Stephen have you checked with the Register office for the region? It is not unknown for entries to not arrive at the GRO, hence do not appear in the index.

Hi Stephen in 1874 civil registration was made compulsary and fines were imposed for late registration, although there were of course ones that slipped through the net. But have you checked registration under the mothers maiden name etc

Hi My great grandfather was registered twice First by his mother and a week later by his father Both times in his fathers name. l don't know if they were married as l haven't found a marriage for them and have only the one child born to them. Lucky enough Liverpool registry office only sent the 1 certificate. They were amazed at it. We had a good laugh over the phone Pam

It should be in the other name as well. I have 4 children, i have never married their father and their entries are in both my name and in the name they were registared. Tina

Hi , i to have learnt something new today. It would appear if your not married but you registar the baby in your partners name it appears again. So once in your madien name and again in the registred name. I have found a total of 9 entries for my daughter. 4 have ref.numbers 2 have my maiden names 2 have a name i was reg. on my birth cert.but not known as. The final one is the name she is and has always been known as. How confused would that make other looking into our family tree in yrs to come.Think of all the money they might spend trying to find out which one is theirs.Then only to find they are all the same . Were you married at the time of registration tina? and do all the entrys for her carry the same reference number? The birth I am refering to happened in 1848.

Hi, my own daughters birth details appear twice as well. Tina omg its on there 5 times,two have numbers,talk about greedy I will make that 7 times as she took on her fathers name and that entry appears twice as well

Hi You see you learn something new everyday. I have a relative who appears twice in the birth indexes, once under the 3rd qtr and again under the 4th. So I ordered both as there is a large gap in years between him and his other siblings (suspected that he was his sisters son etc)..... The certificates arrived this morning and there appears to be no skeletons in the closet! and he seems to have been registered twice because he was registered late, his birth was 18th July and he wasnt registered until the 29 October. Has anyone else had this happen?
