have been trying to track down my great grandfather and his parents, but have got stuck on what to do next. I was told his mother died at child birth and that’s all I know. great grandfather name: William Henry Beckles place and date of Birth: 14 march 1899 Hastings, east Sussex. This is what is on his death cert. I do not know who his mother or father is. and I got his wedding cert, but the father bit is blank. All I know is his mother died at child birth, then his aunt raised him. I found this name Name: William H Bechells Birth: 1900, Hastings, Hampshire, England Residence: 1901, Abbotts Barton, Hampshire, England Which I now know is my great grandfather. he must off stayed there a while then moved in with the aunt who is Name: Alma Jane Pumphrey Birth: 1873, Sussex, England Residence: 1901, St Mary Kalendar, Hampshire, England maiden name is Rogers which is the family who Bechells lived with in 1901 I also found the record when he joined the royal navy. but his name then was William Henry Beckler 14th march 1900, hasting Sussex so I have traced the name Rogers down and am guessing that one of theses women is his mum that died at child birth. Beckles Have you looked for his birth registration under the name of Rogers? He would be registered in his mother's maiden name as she was not married. And don't forget - he might have been born anywhere. OC

i have there are a lot of william or william henry born about then hehe. i do belive he was born in either hampshire or sussex.

Beckles A rather fiddly way of narrowing down the Rogers births, is to order the certs (one by one) from the LOCAL RO, specifying that no father's name is given on the cert. This way, they will not charge you, if the cert is wrong. Alternatively, you could ask the local RO to do a search, using the alternative possible surnames - they will charge you for this, I think it is about £10.(But check first) OC
