How can I do it so I can lose all the black around the image pls? It uses an awful lot of ink and it's costing me a fortune for ink cartridges. Is it possible to open them in something like Adobe so I can 'cut' the image to get just the bit I want?? Please give an Idiot's guide as I'm a bit of a simpleton!!

Hi Andrea I open mine with Microsoft Photo Editor or Microsoft Picture Manager and the 'crop' the black edges off. Any photo editing software should do the trick. Sam x

Normally I just go on Ancestry, search, find the image and print it off so it's not in any special programme, just Ancestry. How do you get Ancestry to open up in that programme to be able to cut the edges off??

Andrea, You need to save the image to your own PC, rather than print directly from Ancestry. Once you have the image file, you can use any image editing software you like to crop, straighten and generally tweak. Not only will you save ink, but the useful image will cover the whole page, so the result is much easier to read, because it is larger.

Ahhh! Thanks Clive. It's a bit long winded that way but I guess it will be cheaper in the end cos of saving on ink. Thanks. (Thanks to Sam too!!)

I have given up printing them at all. Once I have them downloaded, I link the image file directly to the citation of the census source in my family history software, and I can bring up the image to look at any time I want. That saves a LOT of ink!

Clive I have to print them off cos it blags my head when I'm searching for them and forget bits of info and have to keep flicking back and forth. At least if I print it off I have got it at the side of me. Maybe it's just me but it seems easier that way. Also though, it means I have a back up in case my PC does anything stupid to me (as they do!!) and I can also take it with me when I go to Uk so I can do research - it's lighter than my Laptop to carry around!!

I do it at work on the laser printer. One of the advantages of having a laptop.

I paste mine into Word then crop them! Derek
