Thanks for that Gwyneth - I hadn't thought of doing it that way around. I've learnt something very useful there. Also, I hadn't considered looking for Taylor. Looking at the original its obvious that its Naylor. Well done and thanks again! June

June Because he was known to be alive in 1881....... I searched for a child Thomas ( no surname) with father Thomas and mother Jane. I put his date of birth as 1866 + or - 2 years, born in Liverpool. Of the resulting 'Hits', I looked for a possible mis transcription of NAYLOR. Gwyn

Many thanks to all of you - Gwyneth and Potty, yes it looks like you've succeeded where I failed. Alice is not with them but maybe she was staying with other relatives on the night as she is alive and kicking on the 1881 census and with the family. I have looked through Ancestry again but can't find the record! How did you both find it? Am I missing something? Georgina, Jane seems to have been his only wife as she is on 1861 and 1881 censuses. I think the other Thomas you found is actually a cousin of my Thomas. Thank you for trying any way. June

I have my gt gt grandparents on the 1861 census, living in Liverpoool. They are Thomas Naylor born c.1840 in Wigan and Jane Naylor born c.1841 in Liverpool. They have a 1 year old daughter Alice Ann. Thomas is down as Thos. I have found them on the 1881 census, still living in Liverpool and with several other children, one being Thomas who was born c.1866 in Liverpool. I have spent ages trawling through the 1871 census but can find no mention of them. I have tried varying the spelling of their surname but still no luck. I would really appreciate some advice on what to do next.
