Working with Search Results: At the top of the search results window, you will see a series of filters. You can filter search results to show only those with a certain ranking or higher; the default that will be shown is 3-star and up. Search results can also be filtered by data collection or by their research status (Done, Merged, Ignore, Follow Up, etc.) In FTM 2006, you can modify search criteria. Clicking the Edit Criteria button allows you to search for variants on an individual's name or the event being searched. When you click on a search result in the Web Search, if you have a subscription to that collection on Ancestry.com the data from the web will be displayed side-by-side with that person’s data from your Family File. You can then mark the search results that are of interest to you, or hide the ones that are irrelevant. -------------------------------- The search criteria not being retained is answered by the FTM helpline as follows, note that the reference to Ancestry.com shows you which site is being searched and explains the American bias in the resuLts you see. PROBLEM I used the Edit Criteria button to modify the criteria for a Web Search. When I exit the Web Search and return, or when I go to a second page of search results, it performs the search using the old criteria. CAUSE We have reported this issue to our development team and it is under investigation. WORKAROUNDS Narrow the results: Try filtering the results by database or increasing the quality of results. This way, more relevant results appear on page 1. Add the name as an alternate fact: Click here for instructions to add an alternate fact; you can temporarily make the alternate fact a preferred fact long enough to run the search. Search on Ancestry.com: Some people use the Edit Criteria button to run a search on someone who is not in their file. If a person is not in your data file and you do not wish to add them, we recommend that you search for the person directly on Ancestry.com. This way, you do not risk accidentally merging search results with the wrong person in your file. |

There is an option you can take after reaching the first 'results' screen. Look at the top right hand side of the screen and the re is a dropdown menu you can open, from there you can select which database(s) to search. There are 256 database sets that FTM searches through, to reduce them you simply add the ones you want into your 'custom' selection. The problem with FTM 2006 is that when you close the programme the selection is lost and you have to reset it next time. As for websearching, you don't get the bmd ref, or the census result screen added to your FTM programme, all it does is list Ancestry as the source of your info. If you list the sources you end up with a screen full of hundreds of free references to Ancestry which also display on your webpage if you have one. Not much use to anyone really. Give me a minute and i'll add the 'how to' to set the search criteria Glen |

On the home page of your Ancestry account, try taking the tick out of this option: Include records originating outside the UK Cheers, Horatia |

Hi, I've recently starting to use FT2006 which I find is brilliant, it's great how it can look up BDM via the Ancestry website of which I'm a member, but upon searching for family members using FT2006, the column headed 'Database' displays American details, can I narrow down my search so it only displays UK data which will reduce the number of records I have to view? Thanks, Lee |
