Do you mean there is no number in the index? If you mean you can't find the name in the index at all, it probably means his birth was not registered at this early date - unfortunately for you. Anne

I can't find the birth either. Perhaps he wasn't registered as it wasn't compulsory until 1875, in which case there won't be a birth certificate. Kath. x

Really I didn't know that........... So even if I go to record office and find his christening, it still wont tell me his mothers maiden name will it?

Are you sure his surname was Abbott and not Gray? There is a William Gray registered in the last qtr. of 1839 in Driffield which isn't a million miles away. Kath. x

Kathleen.........That could be him William Gray his name was William Gray Abbott out of all the children I have only found one that has been registered that is George, I don't know if I dare risk ordering that one in Driffied but it could be the right one, he was my gt gt grandad, but I better order his brothers that will tell me his parent;s names most important the mothers maiden name. Thankyou you have been a great help to me tonight ......

Since you know that the father's name is John from the baptism, I would give that as a checking point just to be on the safe side. After seeing that all the children were baptised in Beverley, I think it is less likely that the William Gray from Driffield is yours. Kath. x

William Report 13 Jan 2007 10:15

My apologies Sue,for after reading the thead thoroughly, the Christening of William Gray was in 1840,so the Marriage I offered can't be relevant. Regards William Russell Jones Cefn Mawr Wrexham.

The baptism list from the IGI suggests that William was the first child. It is possible he was born before his parents married and registered in his mother's maiden name. Driffield really isn't far from Beverley, specially if she 'went home to mother' Anne
