Hi OC & Kath, Sorry I think I may have misled you. I meant the image says Male for Male and F. Male for Female. The image is is one I was sent with the following information: New York Passanger Lists 1880 Microfilm serial: M237; Microfilm roll: M237_428; Line: 40; List number: 8. I hope this helps. Lou |

If many of the people have the same occupation, then it is almost certainly Servant. Shiploads - literally - of people went out to the new worlds as servants. Not quite sure I have read this correctly, but if it says Male F Sevt then that is a male Farm Servant - sounds far more likely than loads of Gents going out steerage class! OC |

Can you give his name and where you found the information (is it on Ancestry?) so we can have a look ourselves? Kath. x |

Hi,Kathleen & OC, His occupation in England was Engine Fitter and in a later census he is a Machinist, which ties in. At first I had thought it said Gent, but then looking at the record again I realised it wouldn't say that as it says Male F. Male in the next collum. A lot of occupations say the same thing. and it definately looks as if there are 4 letters to the word. the first letter could be an S or a G. Lou I've taken another look at there is a difference between the G and the S and it's definately 'Sent' I'm stumped. |

Looby-Loo are you sure it doesn't say 'Servt' - i.e. servant? OC |

Hi, I've just discovered that my ancestor may have emigrated to America. Under the heading 'Occupation' it reads 'Sent'. can anyone tell me why he could have been sent there? His family followed him a few months later. Surely if he had been in trouble his family wouldn't have been able to follow him? Any help would be great, thanks in advance, Lou |
