Morning all I was under the impression that the BMD indexes (NOT the FreeBMD) were complete on Ancestry. Have just been perusing, desperately trying to find marriage of Herbert Alexander Mathieson and Janet Elizabeth Mustart around 1893, and noticed in the notes on the search page that it is only 50% complete...what a blow, no wonder I haven't been able to find them Chris |

Thanks for your help Reggie, but just can't be sure that that is the right birth cert. It may well be, but really need the MC to be sure. I would then know the father's name and could track the family on the censuses. Chris |

Reggie Their son Donald was living with his grandma in 1901, so I am wondering if they were dead by then. Another son Sidney is nowhere to be found on 1901, so it is a mystery. Chris |

The BMD index images ARE nominally complete on Ancestry, but you have to browse the images quarter by quarter because the only (incomplete) index that exists is the FreeBMD one, which is also available on Ancestry as an alternative. It is always worth looking at the indexed list first, and confirm the entry from the image, but trawling the images themselves is the only answer if the index does not include the event. Roll on the launch of DOVE! |

What does this mean? have I interpreted wrongly? Description: This database is a searchable, digitized version of the indices of civil registrations in England and Wales, reported quarterly to the General Register Office (GRO) in London. This index spans the years between 1837 and 1983. Approximately 50% of the names between 1837 and 1900 have been transcribed thus far. You need the information found in an original index to request a copy of a marriage certificate for the individual referenced. Learn more... Chris |

oo-er. It does say that, doesn't it. It's the FreeBMD blurb, and somebody has incorrectly cut and pasted it into the Complete database, where it doesn't apply. Underselling their own product rather. Actually it undersells the FreeBMD data as well, because the score is a lot better than 50% by now. The FamilyRelatives site has a complete searchable index for 1866-1920. It'll find you Jane Elizabeth Mustart marrying at Romford 1893, not to Mathieson, but you'll have seen that. It won't have anything you haven't seen if you've already trawled the images. |

Just some info to help aid in your search. Some or all you may have already but may also help others in their search to help you: Name: Herbert Alexander Mathierson Year of Birth Registration: 1865 Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep District: Strand (1837-1913) County: London, Middlesex Volume: 1b Page: 514 Herbert's parents were Alexander Mathieson and Elizabeth Wilson (marriage registered 3rd Q 1863 Hackney). Alexander was born in Scotland abt 1830 and was a Chemist. Elizabeth was born in Wortwell, Norfolk abt 1835. Herbert had a sister Julia Elizabeth Mathieson birth reg. 2nd Q 1869 Islington. In 1871 they were at Islington and in 1891 they were all together at Hackney. Herbert was a Post Office Auxillary. Funnily, Alexander (Age 60) occupation is 'Does Nothing'. Herbert gives his birthplace as Islington and Julia gives her birthplace as Covent Gardens. Alexander died in 1895 Hackney (Age 65). In 1901, Grandson Donald Mathieson b abt 1894 Stoke Newington is living with Elizabeth (Widow) and her sister Sarah Ann Martin (Widow) at Hackney. Death Registrations for Alexander and Elizabeth: Alexander Mathieson abt 1830 1895 Jul-Aug-Sep Hackney Greater London, London, Middlesex Elizabeth Mathieson abt 1835 1910 Jan-Feb-Mar Hackney Greater London, London, Middlesex The Jane Elizabeth Mustart that married in the Romford District Essex in 1893 was born in 1866 New Cross, Deptford, Kent and was one of at least 13 children. Her parents were Robert Mustart b abt 1837 Chatham Kent and Amelia Elizabeth Bishop b abt 1839 Woolwich Kent. Robert and Amelia married 4th Q 1858 Greenwich Kent. The family appear to have moved from Greenwich, Kent to New Cross, Deptford, Kent after the birth of their 2nd child Eliza in 1860, then to Peckham, Surrey in the Camberwell Registration District after the birth of their 9th child Phoebe in 1872, then to Dagenham, Kent after the birth of their 13th child, Archibald in 1879. Dagenham is in the Romford Registration District. Father Robert was a Clerk to a Builder in 1881. Birth registration for children of Robert and Amelia Mustart : 1. Amy Maria Mustart 1859 Jan-Feb-Mar Greenwich Greater London, Kent, London, Surrey 2. Eliza Mustart 1860 Apr-May-Jun Greenwich Greater London, Kent, London, Surrey 3. Robert Henry Alexander Mustart 1862 Apr-May-Jun Greenwich Greater London, Kent, London, Surrey 4. William G Mustart 1864 Apr-May-Jun Greenwich Greater London, Kent, London, Surrey 5. Jane E Mustart 1866 Apr-May-Jun Greenwich Greater London, Kent, London, Surrey 6. Edith Matilda Mustart 1867 Apr-May-Jun Greenwich Greater London, Kent, London, Surrey 7. Ellen Mustart 1869 Apr-May-Jun Greenwich Greater London, Kent, London, Surrey 8. James William Mustart 1870 Oct-Nov-Dec Greenwich Greater London, Kent, London, Surrey 9. Phoebe Mustart 1872 Apr-May-Jun Greenwich Greater London, Kent, London, Surrey 10. Frederick Mustart 1873 Jul-Aug-Sep Camberwell (1837-1919) London, Surrey 11. Leonard Mustart 1875 Jul-Aug-Sep Camberwell (1837-1919) London, Surrey 12. Agnes Mustart 1877 Apr-May-Jun Camberwell (1837-1919) London, Surrey 13. Archibald Mustart 1879 Apr-May-Jun Camberwell 1837-1919) London, Surrey In 1891 Jane is recorded as 'Jake E Mustart' residing with parents and siblings at Dagenham, Kent. She is a Draper's Assistant. Possible spouses for this Jane E in the 1893 Marriage Registration at Romford are Daniel Philpin Thomas or George Henry Mead. An Eliza Gray is the other person listed. This does not exclude the possibility of other missing candidates but doesn't look promising as there didn't appear to be any Mathieson's (including variants) of Herbert's description in the original quarterly 1893 Marriage Index pages. |
