My Sister is doing an ancestry tree, with certificates, as one of the gifts for her daughters 30th birthday. She has a birth cert from 1838, our oldest cert. She would like to complete the tree with a birth cert from the youngest member of the family, who is her grand daughter. Her grand daughter was born in august 2006; can my sister apply for such a recent cert., if so does she need a vol and page number?

Lynda if the birth was registered in the last 18 months it will only be available at the local registry office where the birth was registered. I am not quite sure if anyone can apply for it but you will need exact details like date & place of birth. If you ring the registry office concerned they will give you more info. Georgina.

Hi When I re-ordered my daughters birth certificate, shes 5 so a little older than yours....but I ordered through the office which she was registered in and I had to supply her full name, date of birth, my maiden name, both parents names and the place where she was born. p.s they never asked what my relationship to her was, I just wrote all the relevant info on a piece of paper and enclosed a SAE

If you can go into the relevant registration office, they will give you a satndard GRO form (red print for births to match the register binding) to fill in. It does ask purpose of request but you can just tick 'family history' or whatever it says. You may be lucky that the register is still current or, if complete, has not been deposited, as then it will only cost you £3.50 instead of £7. There are 300 entries per register, so it's possible that if it's a smallish office or there are multiple registers in that office or if the entry was an early one in the register, it isn't yet full. If you don't live near the office you need to get the cert from, get a form from your nearest office and post it off with a cheque. Jack
