It was fairly common for one party to 'lodge' at the home of the other, if they resided in a different parish, for the statotory 3 weeks. This meant that the banns only had to be read in the one parish. Jay |

They probably didn't live in the parish at all, which was necessary to entitle them to be married in the parish church, and had 'established' residence on a temporary basis, purely to satisfy the residency test. Alternatively, they were living in sin. It happened a lot. Count the proportion of your ancestors where the first birth is less than nine months from the wedding. I tease my Mother in Law about it all the time, but I soon lost count ... |

I have got several old marriage certs, where the same address is given for both bridge and groom, and I cannot see that on each occasion the wedded couple were living together. Can anyone suggest any other reaso? Vicky |
