Well if he were born 1818 there is a good chance he married after 1837 so you can look for his marriage reference and buy the marriage certificate for £7 from GRO that will give his fathers name and occupation. You can get a rough idea of the year by seeing the eldest childs year of birth. Then you check the bmd index on ancestry free, going through each quarter to find them. First try freebmd site which is not complete but is name searchable. Registrations for births, deaths and marriages only start late 1837. To find the baptisms of this couple you will need to consult parish records - I take it you have already looked on the familysearch.org site IGI? |

Two John Anscombe's in Cuckfield on 1841: John Anscombe abt 1778 Sussex, England Cuckfield Sussex View Record Sarah Anscombe abt 1781 Sussex, England Cuckfield Sussex View Record Edward Tullett abt 1821 Sussex, England Cuckfield Sussex View Record Susan Tullett abt 1821 Sussex, England Cuckfield Sussex John Anscombe abt 1786 Sussex, England Cuckfield Sussex View Record John Davison abt 1816 Cuckfield Sussex View Record Jane Ede abt 1791 Sussex, England Cuckfield Sussex View Record William Gregory abt 1821 Cuckfield Sussex View Record Willmore Kennady abt 1826 Cuckfield Sussex View Record William Robbins abt 1821 Cuckfield Sussex View Record Eli Robins abt 1826 Cuckfield Sussex View Record Thomas Robins abt 1817 Cuckfield Sussex The second's occupation is just given as P; Jane Ede is housekeeper and the others are R Labs, so perhaps P stands for Proprietor? The first is an Ag Lab and there is a Joseph of the right age in Cuckfield as a servant, so I would tend to go with the first as Joseph's dad. Hope this helps Pam |

You wont find a birth certificate for 1818 - registration didnt begin until late 1837 and then it wasnt compulsory to 1875. As I said, you will have to consult parish registers for this but his marriage certificate will help cut down the possibilities by naming the father of the child at the baptism. |

I have some Anscombes in my Tree from around that period in Aylesford Kent. I have the Aylesford PRs on Microfiche so I will have a look for you at the Library when I go downtown tomorrow. |
