Try this for finding out about Births in India - Grampa: www.bl.uk/collections/orientaloffice.html You can search www.a2a.org.uk for document references to a lot of the material in the asia, pacific and africa collections. Don't know what info is on these websites but it's worth looking. Stella X |

Chasing Aunt Lydia. Lydia Langley was born in West Sussex in 1816. The Family moved to the Isle of Wight and by 1841 she was in Service there. 10 years later she is in North Mimms, still in Service, still single, but now a Lady’s Maid in a household which looks as if it had uprooted lock stock and barrel from the South. No sign of the Lady and the head of the Household is a 63 year old Spinster who is described as a (“Private Lady” crossed out) Fundholder. By 1861 she is living at Quidenham Hall, Norfolk, where she is Housekeeper to the Earl of Albemarle. In 1871 she had apparently retired from Service and kept a Lodging House in Great Yarmouth, and was still unmarried. In 1881 she had moved to Basingstoke in Hampshire, described as a Widow where she had 2 children living with her, both described as her grandchildren born in Calcutta, India. I think an email to the OIOC is in order to find out who the childrens’ parents were. |
