Can anyone tell me if you tick the box so that someone else can see your tree, is the said person sent a message to say that they can see your tree.

No, I think it just shows up when they go into 'shared trees' that you have given consent. If you give someone consent and want them to know straight away, just send them a quick Email to let them know.
