I had a look through the Williams on the 1841 & 1851 censuses on Ancestry. The only one I could see with a reference to wool spinning was one where the son William was a Wool Spinner in 1851 and the father James was a Factory Overlooker in 1841/51 (presumably in the wool spinning mill). I was checking for 1833/34 as the year of birth but this one was c1832: 1851 Scotland Census about William Morrison Name: William Morrison Age: 19 Estimated birth year: abt 1832 Relationship: Son Father's name: James Mother's name: Mary Gender: Male Where born: Langholm, Dumfs Parish Number: 839 Civil parish: Langholm Town: Langholm County: Dumfriesshire Address: Henry Street Occupation: Woolen Spinner ED: 3 Page: 24 Household schedule number: 108 Line: 10 Roll: CSSCT1851_209 Household Members: Name Age Agnes Morrison 24 James Morrison 50 Jane Morrison 10 Janet Morrison 7 Mary Morrison 46 Mary Morrison 13 Robert Morrison 3 Thomas Morrison 15 William Morrison 19 Jemima Oliver 8 Mo 1841 Scotland Census about James Morrison Name: James Morrison Age: 40 Estimated birth year: abt 1801 Household: View other family members Gender: Male Where born: Scotland Civil parish: Langholm County: Dumfriesshire Address: Eves Factory Occupation: Factory Overlooker Parish Number: 838 ED: 1 Page: 1 |

Found the family again in 1861 and this time James is referred to as a Wool Spinner. James and Mary (maiden name Beattie) have a son Walter. As you know William & Charlotte also had a son Walter. 1861 Scotland Census about James Morrison Name: James Morrison Age: 60 Estimated birth year: abt 1801 Relationship: Head Spouse's name : Mary Gender: Male Where born: Longholm, Dumfrieshire Registration Number: 839 Registration district: Langholm Civil parish: Langholm Town: Langholm County: Dumfriesshire Address: Henry Street Occupation: Wool Spinner Grocer ED: 3 Page: 16 (click to see others on page) Household schedule number: 89 Line: 21 Roll: CSSCT1861_144 Household Members: Name Age Agnes Morrison 34 James Morrison 60 Mary Morrison 56 Robert Morrison 14 Thomas Morrison son - Wool Spinner on a visit (mistranscribed age 75) Thomas Morrison 3 Walter Morrison 8 Jemina Oliver 10 Looks like the William in the 1851 census has left Scotland as there are no results for a William Morrison born in Langholm of his age in the 1861 Scotland Census. If you search on GR for Morrisons in Langholm there is a Harriet who has this family. You can send her a message to check for a possible connection. April |
