Ashton Under Lyne Barracks 1901 Anyone know?

Would anyone please know which regiment were at the Ashton Under Lyne Barracks. Hartshead. ln 1901 My husband's grandfather was there as a Private in the 1901 census Regards Pam |

Based on a google search it would appear to be the Mancheshter Regiment 4th Battalion - the following is an extract of one soldiers progress 1 Nov 1887 Transferred to 1st Batt. Manchester Regiment (63rd Foot) known as the Bloodsuckers. 21 Feb 1890 Posted with wife to 2cd Batt. (96 Foot) in Bengal where Percy Thomas was born and his wife died of enteric fever. 15 Jan 1892 Posted to 3rd Batt at Ashton. 4 May 1894 Promoted to Colour Sergeant. 9 April 1897 Reverted to Sergeant at own request. 17 Mar 1898 Based at Depot in Ashton. 10 Feb 1899 Moved to 4th Batt at Ashton. 1 June 1899 Promoted to Colour Sergeant. 1901 census, Ashton under Lyne Barracks, near Manchester, with wife Nellie and three children. |
