I have two pictures of my great grandfather (Born 1882, Died 1956) in a uniform (one taken near Pretoria SA). I went to the record office checking WO 363, WO 364 but found nothing. Subsequent research shows he could have been in the City of London Imperial Volunteers and that he was back in england, employed and got married in 1905. In the records office I also checked the imperial yeomanry index and list of all people that left the army (WGO96 or 97?) between 1900 & 1914 (I think) he was nowhere to be seen. Does anyone know where I can find details of his service? |

Graham If he left the army prior WWI you should have been able to find his records easily enough. If he served during WWI in any capactiy it may well be his records were destroyed during the bombing in WWII (depending upon when he left the army, his files would be located in different places) Can only suggest you have another look just in case they have been misfiled or overlooked? |

Thanks for the comments all. Firtsly - check WO97 - no luck there. Kevin Asplin has been a great help, whilst I have found no concrete records with the help of a powerful magnifying glass I saw County of London on a lapel badge and he helped identify that the guy was in the following regiment:- 1/10th (County of London) Battalion TF (Hackney) August 1914 : in Hackney. Part of 3rd London Brigade, 1st London Division. April 1915 : transferred to East Midland Brigade, East Anglian Division. 7 May 1915 : formation became the 162nd Brigade, 54th Division. |
