For people who think that on census records vessels only relate to those vessels in a port on the night of the census, this is wrong, if you look at the description of enumeration district it gives you where the ship is on the night of the census, I have found quite a lot are actually at sea all over the world and not in any port, most are anchored up of the cost of some where but some are actually on the move. The thing is though, if you enter a name and details it will pop up anyway if its on the census, whether he is a sailor or not. I am at a loss where about 4 of my mariners were on most census nights - its maddening. |

Heather, yes they will come up on the search but its the same with searching for rellies on dry land, sometimes you no where they should be but the only way to find them is to search every district one image at a time, I once searched 14 districtsthis way and found them mistranscribed at the address they were at on the following census. Also for Royal Navy ancestors you can check the National Archives under documents on line then 'seamans services' If you find the one your looking for it's worth the £3.50 download because you'll get a list of all the ships sailed on and badges etc |
