am needing help with my great grandfather on census hes Charles Furniss b1827 derby derbyshire. Ihave him on 1861 census married to 1st wife Elizabeth, then on 1871 as a widower his name is mispelt then as Harness. I have him on 1881,1891 and 1901 with '2nd wife Margaret, hes mispelt again on 1881 as Furness, but can find no trace of him for 1851 or 1841. He married Elizabeth Mary ann Quick b1826 in Middlesex in 1848 so should be showing as married on 1851 census but can find no trace for either an extra pair of eyes would be great. His fathers name was John and mother Elizabeth.. thanks in advance Nicky

Hello Kate As you have some time on your hands I'll take you up on your kind offer and good luck with your degree. I have been looking for my grandfather Herbert Allen on the 1901 census for about nine months without success. I've tried everything I can think of in the search box. Perhaps a new pair of eyes might do the trick. This side of my family were Romani so quite hard to pin down to a certain area. They travelled Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Middlesex. I have him in 1891 census. 95 Rockness Hill (Shed) Stroud Gloucester Head. Henry Allen 24 Road Labourer b Nailsworth Gloucester Wife. Mazillia 25 b Shiptons Lane Wiltshire Son. Herbert E 2 b Stroud Gloucester Son. Andrew J 8 months b Staines Middlesex Jan x

Hi again Just to update - I haven't found Herbert or Henry or Mazilla on 1901 just yet, but I'm still looking. I have found the reference for what I think may be Herbert E's birth, though. Herbert Ernest Allen b Jun qtr 1889 Stroud reg dist vol 6a pg 345. Will keep looking and update later. Kate

I've got a Charles Furness in 1841 - the address is No 8 Stanley Crescent, Walton on the Hill, Lancashire. John Furness 40 (occ is illegible) Elizabeth Furness 40 Edward Furness 20 Plumber Jane Furness 20 Charles Furness 14 John Furness 9 Emma Furness 6 It seems to say that all the family were born in Lancashire. I couldn't find Charles in 1851, but Jane and Emma were down as 'daughter' of head of house in 1851, although there was no one else in. Emma was born in Liverpool and Jane in Derbyshire. There is a marriage for Charles Furniss and Elizabeth Mary Ann Quick in Dec qtr 1848 Liverpool vol 20 pg 214, but I haven't found a marriage to Margaret yet. (Margaret was born 1850 in Bolton, Lancashire.

Thanks for that Kate, this could be him the ages match for him and brother and sister Jane and John with info I already have on him, also Walton on the Hill is Liverpool I belive and his marriage in 1848 was in Liverpool, also the 1851 census you saw did say Jane was born in Derby which does tally up, so thanks again for your help. nicky
