Sorry I didnt explain too well, I just wanted the tree split into more managable lumps, plus different parts of the family want thir own bit of tree sent to them, so I just thought before it gets tooo big id split it up. I went to the knowledgebase and its about as clear as fog to me lol, so I am not having much luck yet.... :)

Peter I agree re: master tree and do the same as you. But, as you know, one can have multiple trees (with different names) on FTM. So I split my mother's side from my father's side so that members of that side of the family could benefit from my research. Now I have 3 files .... master, mother, father

Elaine I did the export ... new file .... delete. What I wanted to do was to give my cousin her side of the family (my mother's side) so I removed my fathers side from it. I started at the bottom and worked back. Its a little bit laborious but fairly straight forward. What you do is to go into the main data entry screen and use the 'people' then 'delete individual' options.

Why do you want to split it in to four files? There is no logical reason to do this, unless you want to share only parts of your tree with other people. My master tree which I maintain on FTM on my pc contains absolutely everything about my research and I would not have it any other way.

There are four ways to split the file; Make sure you are connected to the internet then Click on 'help' in any FTM family view. Select 'online help centre' from the dropdown This will take you to the Genealogy website homepage Scroll down the page to 'family tree makers' knwledge base' Click on the link then simply enter 'splitting files' in the searchbox. A list of topics about the subject will appear, you can then choose from the replies (and print the answers if you wish). Glen

Thank you Charles, so for instance i could export the tree then take 3 grandparents off by deleting them, will that remove all lines of the other 3 families of would i have to go back step by step? Sorry for the silly questions but im a bit of a noob lol

Hi Elaine ..... What you can do is to export your main file to a new name ..... File .... export file ... entire file .... new name. Then open the 'new name' file and simply delete/modify as needed.

I started my tree about a year ago and so far have about 1800 people on it, however I can see now that I made a boob of it, and shoult have made 4 separate files for each of my grandparents, is there any way from the tree I have already got to split it into 4 separate gedcom files? Or do I have to start over with the 4 files manually? Thank you
