The new personal tree feature on ancestry is very good. It still has a few bugs but if you load your gedcom to it it automatically looks for census and other records. It also has a timeline for each individual which I like. It is also worth subscribing for the free newsletter which is full of good advice. Once you have paid your seventy pounds for a year there are no extra charges. I think of it as the price of about 10 certificates. Anne

Whoops! just checked the very small print and it says 30 days, not 3 months, sorry! Hilary

Hilary, where did you get the ftm with 3 months for that price please? Ive seen it for that with one month but 3 months is a real bargain worth telling newbies about.

My Ancestry sub has just come up for renewal at £69.95, however I won't renew at the moment as I have just bought a Family Tree Maker program, for £12.25, which includes 3 months Ancestry use. It would be cheaper to buy the FTM every 3 months! I would add that the Ancestry program is worth it, especially if you think of it as only £1.35 per week.

If you havent got a family tree program away from here (and this one is pretty duff) then buy a Family Tree Maker on S and N Genealogy or my-history - I think even the £12 version has a months free ancestry. Ancestry is definitely not a rival to GR, I dont think GR would exist without it and the number of look ups done on here for people from ancestry is the main stay of this site. Im always amazed Ancestry allow it but I guess most people see how good the info is and then rush off to get their own sub.

Thanks all! Its something I'll definately be doing, maybe via the FTM you mentioned, Dawn.

Hi I take our monthly sub of about £10 with Ancestry when I have a lot of census look ups to do. I have had breaks in between. You have to remember to ring up their free number to cancel the sub when it expires or it goes onto auto renewal. I think it is the best value. Liz

I bought family tree maker software and got a free 3 month ancestry trial with it - deluxe version. Well worth the money!! Think the software was only about £35 so worth looking at if you haven't already got software. Can't believe how I did without it now!

You really do need Ancestry to do anything - for £70 a year it is a bargain. You will wonder how you ever managed without it once you are subscribed! Jen

Rebekah, They're not really rivals. Ancestry has far more content than Genes and a lot is free. I get emails from time to time with offers. Your best bet is to phone and ask for the best deals. You can get a big discount that way. Rose

Being loyal to GR, I would still find Ancestry essential, and have come so far on my tree I really need it. Messaged my sister, (also on GR) to ask her, and was told 'They're the rivals!'. Ohmigod, I feel like I should be going undercover to find this info out! Is there one set fee, or different levels?
