I have spent a fascinating morning trying to find out where my Hugh Munro of 1747 may have come from. In my Grandpa's papers were two interesting documents: |

1. A letter from the War Office saying that George Munro of Culcairn had been shot while riding a borrowed horse in a case of mistaken identity. 2. A letter from a Sergeant in the American War of Indpenedence. Sorry - three things - a ship's log written by my ancestor Hugh Munro on board HMS Speedwell and Surprize in 1758-62 I have also found that the Black Watch was founded by George Munro of Culcairn amongst others and the Black Watch went to America for the war there. Does anyone know how I can find anything further? |

There are several things you can do: The National Archives(TNA) is the fount of all knowledge for all things military so google search TNA If you are talking about 1700's and 1800's then a visit to TNA is essential. Some more modern military things are on line but most of this earlier soldiering has to be researched personally. Try googling Black Watch and other Regiments to see what comes up online and then write/phone the various army museums of your interest to see if you can visit to research yourself or if they will do a search for you. Have you tried google searching George Munro of Culcairn? If you have not done so, then I suggest you google in Parenthesis 'George Munro+'Black Watch' and see what comes up. I have just tried to do this in the way I suggested, and masses of information about George Munro of Culcairn and the Black Watch appeared. Googling gets you everywhere! Janet |

Go to your local Library - look in the reference section at a book called 'Who was Who' all volumes are still available in most libraries, While you are looking also look for other names from your tree to see if you have other famous links. Maurice |

Having said that I have just noticed your dates are in the 1700's I do not know how far back Who was Who goes , I have found a few of mine from the 1800's in it. May still be worth a look Maurice |

Thanks Guys! I am off to google now. I have googled the names before but without the parenthesis so I will see if this makes a difference. I have spent so much time in the National Archives I virtually have a bed there now but ---once more into the fray! |
