I have just recieved a birth cert for John Henry Lappage b1873 (mother Harriet Lappage) both living in union workhouse Maldon, but neither of them are still there in 1881 & he doesnt appear with her or in any other census records until 1901, where he is the married. Where could he have been? I'd appreciate someone elses opinion pls. Clare

I would try some variations of the spelling of his surname, this is a common trait in the records. I will have a look for you. Sorry, tried some variations but no sign. Regards Brian

Hi there I had a similar situation with one of my ancestors who was born in a workhouse in 1862. Because health care was too expensive for the poor, the workhouse hospital wings were often used as maternity units for the destitute. My relative was admitted for a couple of weeks just to have her baby. You don't mention a father of the child. Was he illegitimate? If so, the child would be registered under the mothers surname, but, if the couple were subsequently married, as in my case, he would have been brought up under his mother's married surname. When the time came for him to be married, he would most likely be married under his birth name in order to keep the official documentation consistent. My great-grandmother was born and married under one surname but brought up (and appeared on the census) under her fathers surname. Might be worth checking for a subsequent marriage of the parents, and also check with the local record office as they will have the workhouse admission records. Another road is to also ask them to check the petty sessions records for any child maintenance claim which will name the possible father. Best Wishes Julie

Many thanks to you all, Julie as far as i know his mother never married but i will definately try checking with the local records office for admissions of the workhouse. Clare x
