Please could someone have a look at the 1881 Census image for John Holloway, born in Brotherton, listed as a farm labourer, aged 82, widower. It seems to note that he was deaf from age.....and then I can't see the age. Can anyone else make it out for me? Your help is much appreciated. Diane |

It just says that - ''deaf from age'' (in other words, his deafness was due to old age, rather than from birth or specific illness). By the way, his birthplace is Broadthorn, not Brotherton! Cheers Richard |

Thank you, Richard, for that and spotting the difference in place of birth - in fact that throws into doubt whether he is my rellie at all! LOL Actually it can't be him as my John was born in 1793! (I should never trust my fathers 'stabs in the dark' that he passes off as research!) Diane |

I've had bigger errors in age for the 'right' person. ...Had right people born in the wrong country too, on a census. Back to previous census, I think, and see if you can then follow him to see if they are the same person in 1871 and 1881. Gwyn |

Good point Gwyn, On the 1871 census I have him listed as living in Wiggington, head of the family aged 80, which fits better with his expected birth year of 1792. Although for occupation it appears to say accountant, which certainly doesn't follow as all my ancesters seem to be Ag Labs, so far, but I was expecting him to have a wife called Elizabeth. Diane |
