Alan Humphries (02/01/2007 10:24:46) | Update Message | Delete Message Hello, I'm trying to trace my g.grandmother b.1872. The problem that I have is that on one census she is listed as being born in West Ham Essex. I believe that I have traced her family but on that census she is listed as being born in Canning Town Essex. Would the two areas be the same? Any help would be appreciated. Regards Alan

well census birth areas can change from census to census. basically Canning Town and West Ham are all in the same vicinity. Are you looking at registration ares because they can cover quite a broad area Are you looking for her birth cert cos you can search on Freebmd and then click on the reg district and it will tell you the area it covers.

Hi West Ham was the general reg area, it included Canning Town, Custom House, Silvertown, North Woolwich, Beckton, Plaistow, Upton Park, Manor Park, Forest Gate, Stratford etc. The old Essex West Ham reg district is now the London Borough of Newham. Hope this helps Sandra
