In the 1841 Census they are in Harwich and shows James as not being born in the county. In 1851 the family are in Grimsby and he gives his birth place as Sheerness, Kent. His wife Mary is said to be born Brighlingsea, Essex. James senior is definitely NOT in the Harwich Parish register 1878-1800, I have just checked. Jennifer |

You need to check the parish registers for their births as given on the 1851 census... if you are lucky you may find they did not move too much as a family . you may find marriages of parents and their birth in the same parish. If you are unlucky and they moved around alot tas a family then you will be in for lots of time consuming work ! Alice |

Do you think this was a second marriage - the Godfery children are living with them in 1841 - Martha is still there in 1861 listed as daughter? something wrong with birthdates though. Alice |

For general searches pre 1837, save the IGI/LDS site to your favourites. This can be found in your search engine, its a Jehovah's Witness site. BUT it's not always accurate. Remember the census reports too. Even if you have an ancestor born before 1837, they may be on the 1841, 1851, etc up until their death. Ancestry has census access if you're a member, and you can have a free trial period. Register your surnames with curious fox, as its free. |

Martha Godfrey regains her name in 1861 when she is listed with Mary Mummery as daughter, age 23, b. ca 1838, Brightlingsea, Essex. Could this be her birth?? about Martha Godfrey Name: Martha Godfrey Year of Registration: 1839 Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec District: Edmonton County: Essex, Hertfordshire, Middlesex Volume: 3 Page: 108 (click to see others on page) If so, you could apply for her birth certificate and see who her parents are!! Just to give you a few more things to consider, I think Alice is right and this is a second marriage Sarah, Henry and Nathan being the children of James’s first marriage, The GODFREY children being from Mary’s previous marriage and the James MUMMERY aged one being the son of this second marriage, this would explain why he is listed after the GODFREY children. The reason I think this is the case; There was another son James born 5th December 1829, bap. 29 June 1830 who may have died as he does not show up in the census. Nathan was born 29th August 1831 and bap. 5th July 1837. There was another daughter Catherine born 1st June 1839, bap. 1st June 1839, obviously not expected to survive as she was baptised at birth, see birth and death registration references below. Note also the death reference for Mary Ann MUMMERY the same quarter as Catherine, most likely the first wife, as the parents are James and Mary Ann in the Prs. Birth Name: Catherine Mummery Year of Registration: 1839 Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun District: Tendring County: Essex Volume: 12 Page: 245 Deaths Name: Catherine Mummery Year of Registration: 1839 Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun District: Tendring County: Essex Volume: 12 Page: 190 Name: Mary Ann Mummery Year of Registration: 1839 Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun District: Tendring County: Essex Volume: 12 Page: 190 The dates of birth and baptisms are from the actual Parish Register, not a transcription, unfortunately I do not have the marriage registers and only have the burial registers up to 1812.
