I had a quick search but I couldn't find anything that worked. I've got an image from Scotlands People from the 1841 census for my ggggrandfather Alexander Tod, but I can't read the handwriting about the family he was with. My problem is that the surname of the family he was living with is different to his own (I can't make out what it reads). I've uploaded the image and I washoping someone could have a quick look at it and translate it, or help me as to why the surnames could be different. Also, the streetname is Cannongate but at the side it reads 'do'. Could someone also tell me what this means? http://img(.)photobucket(.)com/albums/v510/wiggle_worm/census.jpg Thank you so much for your help. |

'do' means Ditto.It'll be whatever was on the page previously, or the house above. Household: Alexis Robertson, 70 James '', 25 George '', 20 Alexander '', 20 Isabella '', 60 Ann '', 25 Elizabeth '', 15 Amelia '', 15 Alexander Tod, 8 William Horn, 15 |

Bernice - the website is just an image hoster. I copied the image from scotlands people and put it there. Thank you so much you Chris and Tracy. You've been a great help. Is Alexis a male name? |

Me again. I've just tried to find Alexanders birth on Scottish records but no luck. I have his death certificate which says that his fathers name was Alexander Tod and his mother was Jane Mcleod. From the above image and his death certificate I worked out that he had to be born about 1820 . I searched ScotlandsPeople but found no birth for him, or even a marriage between Alexander and Jane. Does this mean that this is as far as I can go with my history? |

If the census image we have been looking at is from 1841, then Alexander Tod would have been born c.1832/33 and not 1820. His age in 1841 is given as 8. The address seems to be 'ditto 10', so if the street is Cannongate, I imagine they lived at number 10. I don't think Alexander Tod was born in Scotland. It says 'N' (for no) in the column that says whether or not born in Scotland. Kath. x |

Sorry, that image was a different Alexander. I'm getting myself confused now! I've got the death certificate for my Alexander and the census records which all point to him being born in around 1820. +/- a year. His death records say his parents were Alexander Tod and Jane Mcleod. I searched for his birth and their marriage and found neither. Update: in the census' it says he was born in Edinburgh. Thanks for the help Kath =) |
