I am still stuck on my paternal grandmother, known as Hannah Jane Harris born c1871 but no record of her birth is to found. There was a Harris family (Charles & Jane) at 4 Middle Street, Shacklewell in Hackney district for about 40 years (1851-1891 censuses). Handed down is a birth certificate for a Jane Macey born in November 1871 at that address. Her mother was Elizabeth Macey formerly Crawley. Jane Harris's maiden name was Crawley. The certificate was obtained in 1936, when Jane Macey would have been 65. So maybe obtained for a pension or insurance claim? Charles and Elizabeth Macey seem to have come out of thin air and gone the same way. I surmise that Jane Macey was brought up by the Harrises as their child, taking the name Hannah Jane Harris, but how to prove it ?

It may well be Elizabeth Macey mistranscribed - I must look at the original image.

The image definitely doesn't look like Macey. More like Malley or Malby. Kath. x

There is a possibility that it is their daughter (although in 1871 she seems to be described as an unmarried visitor) who appears on the 1861 census aged 13. Certainly the age is right to within a year and the place of birth would be correct. But Macey/Mall(e)y would be her married name !

So if Elizabeth is their daughter she was born before her parents married making her name Crawley not Harris. marriage Jane Crawley 1846 Apr-May-Jun Hackney Greater London, London,

I've got that marriage certificate: 1 June 1946.
