Hi Laura
Just saw your message. Am not sure I can be a great deal of help but my great grandmother was a Mary Ann Watters who married James Brown - they lived in Newtownards County Down. What interested me was her father was Rev Thomas Watters and her mother Elizabeth Marshall Glendinning which is the middle name of your John. I think some of his 13 children were Marie,Andrew,Kate,Thomas.Does that ring any bells with your research
Cheers
Andrea

Right, Help?! I really don't know where I go from here. Have just looked at the sites mentioned for irish research etc but I really have no clue where to start with the info I have, or even if it's enough to start looking?

Maybe this is a total red herring, as I don't know what records for Ireland are on the IGI but if you search on the surnames Watters and Clendinning there's one place that seems to have a lot of both names. Magheralin, Co. Down It might just be that lots of areas haven't been transcribed at all and this place has good coverage?

Hi Laura I have just had a look at the census image for 1891, very feint and it doesn't help having an ink blob on his name but I think it is John. The S in Sarah and sister-in-law are different to the first letter of his name. Perhaps somebody else can have a look and see what they think. Maureen

As I mentioned above, it may be Co Down - dont forget the original scribbles were then copied out back at the office so easily mistranscribed .

Hi Sorry, looking back at that message it looks dreadful! Thanks for all your effort and help! Elizabeth Phillips was born in Birkenhead approx 1851. Her father was John, born Wales, and mother was Hannah, born Wales. The word i missed out was Devon - am sure there isn't a county Devon in Ireland. Co Cavan could be an idea! Thanks I think the men may have been in the services, but when I try to look on the national archive site under Thomas Watters or John Watters I didn't really find anything that I thought could be them! On the certificates I have, John Glendinning Watters is down as a master mariner (?), his father Thomas is down (i think) as a clergyman. Thanks! Laura Laura

With a strong accent it could be Cavan

So the query is - what should Co. Devon Ireland be? Well, at a wild guess, Co. Down? I dont suppose this chap was in the services was he? I was very pleased to find my Liverpool ancestor - shown as 'Ireland' on all census has his place of birth town and county shown on his naval record.

righty Ho sure you didnt type it like that may I? Righty-ho. For quite a while now I've been looking for the Watters/Metcalf family from Liverpool and recently I've managed to find quite a bit but I keep hitting stumbling blocks! Thomas Marshall Watters was born c.1881 in Liverpool. His father is John Clendinning Watters and his mother was Elizabeth Phillips. Now, we know from a great aunt that they came from Ireland, but no real idea where from. On Ancestry, 1891 census I've found Elizabeth Watton (now I'm sure this is Elizabeth Watters nee Phillips, just mistranscibed/misheard the surname). She's with her brother Thomas, his wife Sarah (both Phillips). Here;s where the trouble starts. Thomas M is down being born 1881 Birkenhead, correct. There is also an Elizabeth age 13. There is a John V down as a son, age 4, and the head is down as Sam E, age 41 born , Ireland (?!) I'm guessing he probably had a strong accent, and that maybe JOhn is the dad and Sam is the son? Or maybe they wrote Sam but it is actually John C? (am going to search the birth index when i can actually get back onto ancestry, groan) ((. However, I've never head of *******in Ireland, and am not sure which county it could be?))**Have you mised a word out ** We previously thought there could be links with SLigo, is it likely means it's the only one I could think of that could be mistaken for it. I purposefully have been putting off researching the irish part so far, but if this could help narrow my search then i would like to get started! ( I know John C Watters' father was Thomas Watters, if that's any help!) Sorry for the longwinded message. New Years wine has got me carried away! Laura x
