Knowing Whether a Relative Fought, WW1

I'm currently in the process of writing a biography of sorts for my grandfather Barnett Solomons born 1882. I was wondering how you know if a relative fought in a war? I have looked on the national archives website and found a couple of entries for the medal index, but how can i know for sure it's the right person? I also know there's a slim chance of service records surviving, so im quite stuck. This is where a knowledgable family member would come in handy! Adding to the difficulty is the fact i was born 62 years after he died, it is rather strange! Thanks for your help in advance, Liz |
