Can someone please help. I am pulling my hair out. My GGrandmother Margaret Johnstone seems to have appeared in Australia with no birth record. She was married in May 1889 to George Leonard (his second marriage) on the certificate it says she was born in Roma Qld Aust, but she couldn't tell them her parents names. On the certificate there were two witnesses William Johnstone and also Maggie Muirhead. William was the station (property) owner where she was married. Margaret was known as Maggie. Some relatives say she was possibly of aboriginal decent and some say indian ??????? I have now been stuck with this relative for 12 months and it is driving me crazy. HELP!!!!!!!! |

If she was aboriginal (or part aboriginal) then it's likely that her birth was never recorded. In the 1960's my aunt adopted a little girl who had been abandoned with no paperwork. |

Any ideas as to how to find out further information or do I just call this one a dead end and give up? After this amount of time I feel like I should but my Dad would also like to find out where he is from. |

I would want to investigate William Johnstone. Was it just coincidence that Maggie shared his surname....or did he 'own' her as slaves were owned in America and took on the plantation owner's name.? How did Maggie come to be there? If she knew she was born in Roma, someone must have told her, at some point. or... was it on any records if she went to work for William. Could any such record suggest her parents' names and whether or not there was an agreement to work? Gwyn |

I have tried gaining records from the station but to no avail. The property has changed hands several times and the current owener who was very helpful said that he had also asked for the records out of interest, but couldn't get them. We had thought that if she was part aboriginal that she may have taken on Williams name. How would you go about finding this out?? |
