This looks like Joseph's birth reference (also in Chorlton):- Joseph Appleton Sept. qtr. 1898, Chorlton, 8c, 966 Kath. x

Clare it was only in 1911 that MMN was added to the birth index, prior to that it was order the cert and find out, lol!

Clare if you order the birth certificate then Mary's maiden name will be on it & then you can start looking for the marriage. Georgina.

This is Alice M. Appleton's birth reference:- Alice May Appleton June qtr. 1900, Chorlton, 8c, 981 This certificate will give her mother's full name. Kath. x

There are quite a few William Appleton marriages in Lancashire. There is this one which would be when your William was about 21 (I always start looing when the groom would be about 21):- William Appleton, March qtr. 1885, Chorlton, 8c, 799 One of the other names on the page is Mary Ellen Edwards. Do you know if this couple had any children? It might be easier to find a birth reference for one of their children and this would give you the mother's full maiden name. Kath. x
