Peter, Have you installed the new Media Player 11? I have had no problems with IE7 although I only use it to access Windows Update. The toolbar, although different to IE6 toolbar, can be easily customised. I have also installed the new Microsoft Live Messenger toolbar in IE7 and this works fine. I have seen some posts, on another thread, about missing favourites with IE7. They are all still there, just click on the gold star on the left. Having said all of that I use Firefox for my main browser. Paul |

IE 7 is the only update that I have ever had to uninstall. For some reason it causes Windows Media Player to stop working. No matter what I try it fails to work. One of the problems with WMP is that is is too integrated within IE (Remember the court case Microsoft Lost?) Even after they were forced to allow other media players the still refused to un-itegrate it altogether. As a result it is not possible to uninstall WMP and do a clean re-install. So at the moment It is WMP and IE6 or IE7 and no WMP. Anyone got any suggestions? |

The IE 7 toolbar isn't the same as the IE6 one, but it can be customised so that it has the same tools as you are used to. Sooner or later you will have to upgrade, or stop using Microsoft software altogether. There have been some bugs in IE7 (although it has behaved faultlessly for me on lots of different PCs), and I wonder whether some users have had difficulty because they have not kept up to date with all the operating system tweaks, service packs and security updates which pour out of MS all the time. IE7 is great. I wish GR would WAKE UP! and introduce code which can tell which browser you are using, so that opening the family tree opens a new tab in IE7, instead of a separate window. But anyone who has used IE7 without problems wouldn't want to go back. |

I asked this question as it was suggested to me, on another thread, that it was a way out of keep being reminded of 'updates available' At first i clicked on the icon and downloaded what was available - only to loose my IE 6 toolbar. I then used system restore and toolbar went back to what it was. I had replies telling me it was IE 7 that was causing the problem, although others seem to disagree. It was also suggested that i looked at the updates available on windows and picked and chose what i wanted out of them, or those that i 'should have for security reasons' All very well if you are computer literate - which i am not!! It showed 1 High Priority = IE 7 11 Softwear of which 5 were KB numbers and things like Remote Desktop Connection Rights Management Services Client Microsoft NET framework Smart Card Cryptographic Service Provider WMDRM None of this means a thing to me. If i ignore the updates icon, or am a bit slow in clicking it off, it keeps downloading IE 7,and i loose my toolbar again, then back i go to system restore, hence i wanted to switch it off Maureen |

You can control how updates work. I have my PC set to download but let me choose when to install. To access the setting, Go to Control Panel, Security Centre, and click on Automatic Updates. Select the options you require. As has been mentioned elsewhere it is foolhardy not to install all critical updates as they are needed to protect your PC. However, the recent dialogue has been brought about because IE7 came across as an auto update and many of us are not ready to install this yet because of problems it causes with other programs on our PCs. If you don't want to install something, then when the little shield icon appears in your tray open and click on custom. Untck the install box and mace sure you also check the box so as you are not advised again for this upload, otherwise it will just reappear. |

If you're trying to cancel the automatic updates that are being sent to you from the WINDOWS UPDATE SITE, its best to keep them coming and downloading them as they are a fix for security risks. Judy |
