I'd ask relevant questions to see if you have a match such as what was his occupation? What was the name and occupation of the father on the marriage certificate? what was the address at the time of the marriage?

Do you know the name of the person who married your relative? If so and it is the same name as given in the message then just reply saying you think the birthdate is different but the person is the same person. If you don't know who your relative married then just say you are not sure if it is the same person, but give any details that you do know (such as siblings or parents names). Kath. x

Thank you all for your replies. The person whose they are enquiring about is a female and I don't have any details of a husband for my one. It's just that I am puzzled as to why the person contacted me when the year of birth is so obviously different. Surely if they got the name from Hot Matches, they would have the year of birth for my ancestor? Lynne

Granny Lynne They may have picked up the name by doing a name search - that is what I do, as it is usually a more accurate method than Hot Matches. OC

OC Do you mean that would explain why they have a different birth year? Lynne

Granny Lynne pmsl! Well, depending on how desperate I am to find someone and how much I have already looked, I might contact someone who had my James Holden, but born in a different year, say, because believe me, I have exhausted every possibility for a James Holden born in the correct year, so I am moving my search outwards, year by year. I do always explain that I am clutching at straws, and why, and give the names of his second wife and children, which usually sorts it out straight away as being a useless match. OC

The best way to find out if the person they have is the same as 'your' lady is to ask them to tell you the names of her parents................if those match, then perhaps you can take it further........... Reg
