Is Fisher a Catholic name?

Difficult to say that any name is 'Catholic' but there is a Catholic saint called 'John Fisher' and the tale sounds likely. My great grandfather left a seminary in Ireland and was disowned by his family! Bit harsh in those days! Hope this helps. Liz MacIntyre |

There was a St. John Fisher who died in the 1530s, but I don't know that it was a major Catholic name. |

Surnames tended to originate from occupations, or places of residence, so Fisher would probably have started with people who were fishermen.........I'm not aware of any connection with any religious denomination; although others may know better......
