Difficult to say that any name is 'Catholic' but there is a Catholic saint called 'John Fisher' and the tale sounds likely. My great grandfather left a seminary in Ireland and was disowned by his family! Bit harsh in those days! Hope this helps. Liz MacIntyre

Hi Ros, Most Fishers in Ireland are Protestants. Good Luck.

There was a St. John Fisher who died in the 1530s, but I don't know that it was a major Catholic name.

Reg , thanks for your reply. I`m having a real problem . Thought I had found her in England but now got info to say she born in Co. Mayo --see my other thread -don`t want to repeat the info. Ros

Surnames tended to originate from occupations, or places of residence, so Fisher would probably have started with people who were fishermen.........I'm not aware of any connection with any religious denomination; although others may know better...... Are you having trouble locating this person on a census? Reg
