At the moment it`s word of mouth! I`ve had an Irish search done and she wasn`t found -now my Mum`s cousin says she was born in Co. Mayo. I found someone with same name and father in Warwickshire so now BIG BRICKWALL, Ros |

Ah ..... we used to think that my great-grandmother came from Galway (no idea why). To cut a long story short, it has transpired through detective work that she married in Co. Mayo, she was born in Dublin (before civil registration started), her sister was born in Fermanagh (before civil registration started), and their brother was born in Galway (after civil registration started), and their parents married in Co. Tyrone. ........... :-) |

These Irish would send you potty! My mother said she came from 'THE NORTH' --could be NORTH POLE!!! Had a paid search done --no trace in all of Ireland . Now cousin says Co. Mayo but she was working in Co. Dublin when she got married and I have same name and father in Warwickshire in 1871 and 1881, Ros |

Another ah .... the north can mean a hundred and one things .... :-) People living south of the River Liffey in Dublin refer to people living north of the River Liffey as people in the north. My late uncle was astounded when I told him that great-granny came from Dublin (according to the 1901 census - the 1881 and 1891 solely stated Ireland) because he thought that she came from the north! Have you tried exploring the genuki site for Co. Mayo? |

Ros Have you had a look at the distribution of the Fisher name in Ireland? Looks like the name may have been popular in the North (Down and Antrim in particular) but it doesn't look like the name was popular in Mayo. I know that's not to say that there weren't any Fisher's there but sometimes it is useful to know where the neame frequently occurred in order to narrow down research especially in Ireland. http://www(.)ireland(.)com/ancestor/surname/ Karen |
