Hi, I'm still looking down the same line as before but have hit a rather interesting area. In the 1871 Census I have found my 'possible' great great grandmother - Emily Smith Source Citation: Class: RG10; Piece: 3444; Folio: 49; Page: 12; GSU roll: 839416. Can anyone explain what on earth is going on here? Her father and mother have a different surname. They seem to have servants and boarders with them. Is it as simple as she is the eldest child that she may have been born out of wedlock? Also can anyone read what it is that Edward Frith's occupation is? I have tried and tried and can't make any sense of it. Thanks Nick

What a rotten image! Edward's occupation....Licensed Victualler. That ties in with Emily's .....Barmaid Chris

Edward is a licensed Virtualler (sp) works in a pub, perhaps Emily is daughter of Ann and should have been put down as Stepdaughter to Edward. Or missed heard and is a frith too but wierd not under Edward and Ann as eldest daughter Jeanette

Hi Nick Edward's occupation is Licensed Victualler. I'm guessing here but the enumerator has made quite a lot of errors so perhaps either Emily isn't 'his' daughter but another relative or even a boarder, or perhaps 'Frith' rhymes with 'Smith' and he misheard? She's the only one of his 'children' who wasn't born in Gainsborough. Mandy :)

here is marriage Edward Frith Year of Registration: 1852 Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun District: Gainsborough County: Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire Volume: 7a Page: 1327 (click to see others on page) Ann Smith so perhaps she is a Emily Frith and not Smith or her middle name was Smith after her mother

Hi thanks for all the help. Emily Smith married George Todd in 1876 in Mansfield. The family seems to move back and forth from Mansfield & Gainsborough quite a lot at this point in my family history. I haven't got any certificates this far back yet however an earlier post regarding my grandfather... I have confirmed that this is the right line as I have spoken to my second cousin who has some certificates confirming his dads parents and has their marriage certificate. So this leaves me with this strange link in my tree. I have another strange one because I have a family with people born in Leeds, Mansfield & Gainsborough all in a relatively short space of time. It's a tangled web. Nick
