i have been searching on ancestry, not sure when he died but i have a photo of him which was taken 1940ish in West Ham, he was on 1901 census living in East Ham.

I can see him on the 1901 census you can search for free on Ancestry BMD index's but could be a long trawl http://www.ancestry(.)co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx Remove brackets its free to register too Jeanette

You can cut the trawl down by a bit by using familyrelatives.org - its pay to view but you can enter a name search for the period 1866-1920.

When did he die? What is the last census you have him on alive? He could have emigrated, other than that you will have to search the death indexes on Ancestry. Sam x
