Thank you all for the info. I've traced back down the route that Kath has taken me and found a few marriages that tie in also. I'll set about getting the certificates to confirm them working backwards as suggested. Thanks again Nick

Going by the marriage that Reg found for your great grandparents, your great grandfather had a middle name - he was listed on the marriage as Harry F. Todd. I found this Harry F. Todd on the 1901 census:- Name: Harry F Todd Age: 12 Estimated birth year: abt 1889 Relation: Son Mother's name: Todd Gender: Male Where born: Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, England Civil parish: Gainsborough Ecclesiastical parish: Gainsborough All Saints Town: Gainsborough County/Island: Lincolnshire Country: England Street address: 30 Melrose Road Occupation: Condition as to marriage: Education: Employment status: View image Registration district: Gainsborough Sub-registration district: Gainsborough ED, institution, or vessel: 6 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 107 Household Members: Name Age Todd Emily 48 Alice A Todd 21 Frederick G Todd 23 George E Todd 6 Harold J Todd 19 Harry F Todd 12 Robert A Todd 14 Source Citation: Class: RG13; Piece: 3113; Folio: 88; Page: 22 This family seems to be in the right place and the Harry F. Todd here has a brother called Robert A. Todd born Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, approximately 1886/7. On checking the births for this time, this Robert's middle name is Allan (could be your grandad's Uncle Allan). This is Robert Allan Todd's birth reference:- Robert Allan Todd Dec. qtr. 1886, Gainsboro', 7a, 725 This would seem to be your great grandfather's birth reference:- Harry Francis Todd June qtr. 1889, Gainsboro', 7a, 738 The parents of Harry Francis Todd and Robert Allan Todd were called George and Emily (from the 1891 census). You will need to buy some certificates to confirm these facts, starting with the most recent (your grandfather's birth) and then his parent's marriage and so on backwards. Kath. x

Hi You need to send for the birth certificate using the reference that Keith has put on for you, this would confirm his Father and Mother's names and Occupations. You can search for the marriages reference if you register free on Ancestry and access the full BMD images. Gail.

I have gone backwards to my grandfather but I come to a dead end at that point apart from the marriage certificate which states Harry Todd as his father. In the 1891 census I have found a Harry Todd of Bardney, Lincolnshire. His father is Edward Todd (a farm labourer) which matches as far as the job goes. Unfortunately the other information isn't particularly useful. Is there a way of looking a person up by marriage from --> to basis i.e. searching for an Edith Gunn marrying a Harry Todd? My grandfather also had a brother called Francis William who was younger than him.

You should be going backwards from what you are sure of, not jumping in and then trying to match it all up. Who have you found in the census who may match up? Have you got grandads birth cert? This will give his mothers name and you can then find the marriage of his father and mother and buy that certificate - which in turn will give their fathers names. At that point you will be able to see if the family is correct.

Hi, I'm trying to find my great grandfather in the records but have so far drawn a blank apart from a few details. On my grandfathers wedding certificate his name is mentioned as Harry Todd. We also know that my grandfather was born in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire in 1911. There is a possibility that he married an Edith Gunn but as yet that hasn't been confirmed... just family knowledge. My grandfather was called Leon Alan Todd and I have found records of people living in Lincolnshire with a child of about the right age in the 1881 census but I have no idea on how to check this. We also believe they were farm labourers and the ones in Lincoln match this also. A problem we also have is that my grandfather always mentioned an uncle Alan and the family that I have found doesn't appear to have an Alan (unless it's an unmentioned middle name). Any ideas on how I could proceed? Thank you
