Hi, I've managed to find my grandmother on the births register but she was orphaned at an early age so we know very little about her parents.Is there something I should be doing to try and find out more. Her name was Edith P Thornton and she was born in November 1912, Prestwich. I know her mothers maiden name is Woodcock and we're pretty sure that her fathers name is Earnest Augustus. I am pretty new at this so a kick start in the right direction would be very much appreciated. Thanks In Advance

The only way to proceed with any degree of certainty is to purchase the birth cert. It will tell you the full names of the parents, and enable you to look for their marriage, which will, in turn, provide you with the names and occupations of each of their fathers. With that info, you can start to look on 1901 census.........and earlier. Reg
