Unlike here, there is no central point for German BMDs. You will need to know the town of birth to get further in the history. The main point for researching is the IGI - International Genealogical Index which is found on : http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true enter the name in full, the Region, year of birth as far as you are able even if you have to give a 10 year spread. the records generally go as far as 1900. You don't say which war but I am hoping that you mean 1914-18 which would probably mean a birth in the 1890s at least. Another point that you must be aware of is the religion - which will probably be given if you see the name in the IGI.
