Genealogy Chat

I have a Generations Family Tree Programme which was 8 but now updated with a patch to be used with Windows XP. I sent the tree in this format to relatives in the USA but they were unable to open it with their Family Tree Maker Programme. I understand if I can create a Gedcom File then this will work with their Family Tree Maker. I have managed to get a Gedcom Viewer on my computer but still cannot get my Generations Tree into this format. I have been on to the Rootsweb site for Generations information but still unable to use the Gedcom in the way suggested. Can anyone help me please?

Janet, Iit is not entirely clear how far you have got with this. Can you confirm first that you have managed to export and save a file that had .ged as its name extension? eg MYTREENAME.GED

Here is a set of instructions I found How do I export my data from Generations Family Tree? 1. Open the file you'd like to export to GEDCOM in Generations Family Tree. 2. Click on the File menu and move your mouse cursor down to Import/Export or Export, depending on which version of Generations you have. 3. Click on GEDCOM File... 4. Make sure that: * The Who box is set to All Individuals * Include sources is checked * Destination is set to Other if that option is available. If that option isn’t available, then set Destination to GEDCOM 5.5. * GEDCOM Character Set is set to Windows 5. Click the Export... button 6. Decide on a location to store your GEDCOM file so that you can easily retrieve it again. A reasonable place to store your file might be your Desktop or My Documents. You can access these by clicking on box next to Save in and scrolling all the way to the top. You will find both the Desktop and My Documents in that list. 7. Type a file name next to where it says File name. An example file name would be MyData.ged 8. Click Save.

Peter Many thanks for these instructions. I will have a look at this and see if I can get my head around them. I am struggling with this part of technology so I am not sure myself how far I have got! I will run it off and have a go at it later on tonight and will tell you how I get on. I had hoped to send the tree for Christmas but they may have to wait! At present I just have the tree in the Generations Programme and all attempts to get it into a Gedcom Format are stretching me to the limit! I had thought that if I had the Viewer that I could have put it into that but maybe I am not correct on that one? Janet

Good luck. I don't have GFT personally so can't confirm how good the instructions are, but is has come from a reputable site.

Peter I had a good look at your instructions and realised that I had already got that far, and in fact had even downloaded the Gedcom Viewer and had the file in the viewer! However, what I realised I could not do then was read the file very clearly, as it was all jumbled lines on a blue background. I then wondered if there was a bug in the system, so your very good instructions decided me to look further into the problem, and I found a website on this gedcom viewer, which showed me the same jumbled picture that I have. I then followed their instructions which showed clearly how you work the file with effect. Now the Help instructions on my Viewer are much clearer to me after reading this!
