My mother in law ( Still alive) was adopted when she was 17 yrs.She was born in 1927 while her mother was single. On her birth cert her mother states that she is married to the father and names him. ( A lie ) About 2 yrs later the mother marries someone else and Ma in Law is brought up as a daughter of that marriage. In 1944/45, M in Law wishes to join the army and is told the truth. Step father and mother both adopt her. On the copy of her Adopted Childrens Register certificate it gives details of the date and juvenile court where the adoption order was made. My question at last, Would these court records still be available, and if so how would I go about getting a copy. Matt |

Matt the answer to your question is yes.I recently had court papers, regarding court adoption papers 'unsealed'. The adoption was in 1944 in Glasgow, and the papers were held in the national archives in Glasgow. Because we live 300 miles from Glasgow they sent the papers to my nearest court, where you can read them, and also now because of the freedom of info.act you can have a copy. It turns out that I now have six brothers and three sisters that I hope to meet in the near future. |

What Jyne says is right, they can be BUT only by the adoptee themselves, not just anyone. and you need to bear in mind Scots law is differnt to English |

Hi Mat If ma in law is listed on the Adopted Children Register I am assuming she was adopted in England or Wales. As she was adopted at a later age (17) by her mother's husband and therefore not the 'usual' adoption, I'd imagine the adoption files to be fairly brief and more of a formality. Only your MIL can apply to the court for details. As you have the name and date of the court where the adoption was granted I would advise MIL to apply for them. MIL might also like to try the court direct and ask them to release the file... they will ask her to complete CA6 form first. This form is for the adoptee only and gives authority to receive information from court records. Go to www.gro.gov.uk click into adoptions and follow the links it will tell you more about it. Hope this helps. Cheers Gerry |
