Hello Jay thank you for responding ,the date was about 1927, it was just a general enquiry I have absolutely no idea of her connection to the bride and groom(John Mountford Van derVelde and Florence May Booker).

Hi Katherine When I'm looking for double barrel names I always put the first surname as a middle name in the forename box when searching. this may help Sylvia

Hi Katherine, You haven't given us any clues as to what sort of date you're looking at, or which records you have been looking for - census or BMD. Could this have been a married surname, in which case there would be neither birth nor marriage entry for her and no census entries prior to her marriage. Wonder if she was a Lewis who took the name of Short, or product of a Lewis/Short marriage at some time? Jay

Hello Jess,thanks for answering.Kate Lewis Short was a witness on my G.patrents m.cert. I've tried putting her name in Ancestry but can find only a lot of one name or the other,I don't even know how she knew them, it was a long shot.Ho hum back to the drawing board.

Hello all,can someone tell me when looking for a surname with a hyphen do I search for the 1st name or the second.The name I' m trying to find out about is Kate Lewis-Short. Many thanks.
