.The free programme I have downloaded is PAF companion 5.2 Basic. When I get it up on screen what do I do because it is not at all clear!!!!! Thanks again to you all you really are all so helpful, now I know why it was all gobble de gook to me I have downloaded the wrong thing, I dont know how I managed that one. UPDATE...................... Thanks to you all for your patience with me today, its been a long long day. Have just downloaded the correct software. I use the free one from the LDS site......easy to download, and easy to use. www.familysearch.org Look for the Order/Download Products tab and click on it...........then on Software Downloads - Free Reg

You can add it to ancestry or tribal pages but I would recommend you get a family tree program of some sort - the free PAF from LDS familysearch.org or a paid for one like Family Tree Maker - there is so much more you can do on a 'proper program' compared with this GR one. Plus you can back up your info to cd or the internet to keep it safe.

I've used the free PAF software from the LDS site for several years and found it really easy to use. Lots of people recommend Family Tree Maker. The best deal I have found is at Morrisons supermarket £5.99. It's packaged as Who Do You Think You Are? Family Tree Maker. To install, you just stick the disc in and follow the prompts. Can't really go wrong. I got it last week as it seems it will print off better trees and reports compared to PAF (not tried yet though) You can export your tree from here (see Import/Export in links down left hand side) and GR will mail your Gedcom file in a few hours. You can then open it using whatever family tree software you want.

Hi Jane I use Family Tree Maker. Haven't had it long so I'm still getting to grips with it. Like you, I'm not hot on technology! lol ;-))))))) But if you look on 'the other side' they have a thread full of hints and tips on how to get the best out of this program Jeanette x

Jane, I am in the same boat as you, I am a complete idiot when it comes to Nuclea physics!!!!. Can I suggest you go to your front door, about the time the kids come home from junior school, grab the first 9-10 year old you see and i bet you they can do it. I think i need to get my brain re-wired lol lol Kathlyn

The PAF programme from the LDS site copes with as many generations as you need to input............I've got at least 10 on mine!! Reg

Jane, Don't give up. I have PAF 5.2 - what is it that you are trying to do? I see that you have a tree of 195 here on GR. Do you want to run that tree on your own PC at home? Have you already exported a data file from GR by e-mail? You mentioned that you have PAF Companion - that isn't a family history programme, but an add-on that produces additional charts and reports from the PAF program itself. You will need to download & install PAF 5.2 (it's about 9.75mb, so just a little larger than the companion programme). Happy to help, if you want help ...

Since it's a different program, and the companion is meant to be used with it, I don't see the problem in downloading the right one now :)
