I've been hunting for ages for the marriage of William BOWN to Caroline MOSS abt c1851-1857. The nearest I can find is Henry William Charles BOWN m Caroline Ann MASH lambeth Jun 1855, v10,p390 My problem is whether it's worth sending off for the certificate. The Bown family is fairly elusive - William doesn't seem to exist pre 1861 when he turns up transcribed as BOWNA married to Caroline. Their daughters birth cert gives the family name as BOUND. In subsequent census the name is BOWEN, BOWN(S) and finally BOWN. In all cases his birth place is Chalford, Gloucestershire abt 1830 although I can't find him. Caroline gives her birth place as Mitcham and I think I have found her family - father goes by the wonderful name of Justinian! William and Carolines children were all born in Mitcham too, which brings me back to the original question - would they have married in Lambeth if Caroline and their children were born in Mitcham.? Will I be wasting money by sending for this cert? Your opinions would be much appreciated, Sue |

I normally start with the census i have and then use the same details without surname 1861 Caroline Bowna William abt 1835 Mitcham, Surrey, England Wife Mitcham Surrey 1851 Caroline Mass Elizabeth abt 1835 Mitcham, Surrey, England Daughter Mitcham Surrey So i would say it is the correct marriage. |

Sue, there's a William Band on the 51 census, born 1831, Chalford, Gloucestershire. Unfortunately, he's not with family, he's a servant in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Not much help, is it? Margaret |

Thanks guys I think I'll probably order the cert - hopefully it will give me lead to William's family assuming it's the right one! I hadn't come across Wiliam Band - I'll have a look to see if he's still in Glos. in '61 to try and eliminate him. Thanks, Sue |

Jim - that looks like strong possibility - according to my map Bisley is only a couple of miles from Chalford! Thanks, Sue |
