Hi, can anyone help me im trying to get further details on JAMES ALLAN WOOD born in 1921 Scotland, i have bought his marriage certificate which has confirmed his DOB, and i know later on in life he moved down to Yorkshire. His father is also called James Wood. Can anyone find a birth, or his mother's name? It also could be that James was born in the last quarter of 1920 but registered in 1921. Thank you in advance. |

For births after 1905, you have to apply direct to the GROS for information: http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/famrec/bdm.html Is he still alive? |

In Scotland BMD's are not registered in quarters, just thought id say, as we dont use index's like the English. As the first person to reply said, since its after 1905, you'll need to get in touch with the GROS directly or wait till one of the members is making a trip to the Edinburgh Records Office. And i dont think the death cert will tell you where he was born. Once you've got his birth cert, it'll give you give fathers name, mothers name (and maiden name), occupations and possibly the date they married and where. Once you have that you'll be able to the Scotlandspeople.org for your searching. Its a very good site and allows you to see the cert and print them out if you want. Hope this is of some help Mhairi |

Hi Mark, The English death certificate does have a box for date and place of birth. The information will only be as accurate as what the informant told the Registrar. I have my grandmother's 1989 English DC, it gives the incorrect place of birth as my mum, in her grief, got confused...well about 50 miles confused! With the information already provided you could get the DC from the GRO in England but,if I were you, I'd get the Scottish BC as, like Mhairi says, that will give parents names and where & when they married, you can then log onto SP, buy credits and view their marriage certificate and track back from there. Good luck with your search. Donna |
