Ship's logs - anyone know where I can find?

Hi Heather, that's the problem I don't know. All I know for sure is what is written on his son's baptism record and on the cenus. Baptism record states: chief Engineer HM Steam Bernice, and on the census his wife is listed as 'Engineer's wife (Royal Navy)'. I know the ship was not a Royal Navy ship in fact it was built I believe in Scotland. Lou |

Hi shirley & Dave, thank you for your comments and advice. Unfortunatley I know the ship sunk, so there is no chance of a rename. But I will take on 'board' oops sorry couldn't help it. your comments and take a look at the sites mentioned and bear in mind to check the charges. Great advice about Merchant Navy - never thought of that, thanks again, Lou |

Hi Lou, Had a similer problem and found out the ship was re-named several times as it was sold to differrent shipping companies. Mine was Blue Funnel Line and believe it or not they have an Archivist who was brilliant and could supply pictures etc,........a possible avenue to try.......Good luck, Dave |

if he wasnt Royal Navy then try Merchant Navy. some of these are at Kew and some are held in Newfoundland!!. Apparently the gov.going to destroy merchant navy logs but due to a big uproar they were forced to rethink and find alternative storage. the University of Newfoundland holds about 70% of old records at The University of Newfoundland,St Johns, Newfoundland,A1B 3YI,email mha.at.mun.ca.you know the drill about ats in eamil addresses!! You will need to know the vessels name &&&& they do charge for searches try googling merchant navy records and looking at the site Research guide A3. You may get lucky .i did with grandads records early 1900.s Shirley |

Hi all, My gt gt grandfather was supposed to have been a chief engineer aboard the ship named Bernice. His son was born in India and I got the info from the baptism record from there. In 1851 he was in Staffordshire. 1861 census states he was a Royal Navy Engineer but apparently the Bernice was not a Royal Navy Ship. His child was born in 1857 in India. 1871 onwards he was in Staffordshire, I'm trying to find out if he was in the Navy (so that I can obtain his records) or just sent to India to work on the railways. I'd also like to find out if his wife joined him overseas and don't know where to go to find that info. I have tried the National Archives site, but it's confusing and I can't find anything relating to the ship Bernice. Thank you in advance for any adivce offered. Kind Regards Lou |
