Research Traceline What will it cost? Our fees are kept as low as possible as we are a non-profit making service and only seek to recover our costs. They are payable in two parts: Processing and searching Our standard fee for processing your application and undertaking a comprehensive search is £30.00 including vat. For an additional £10 including vat we also offer a priority service – this guarantees that your search and our response to you is completed within five working days. A full date of birth must be provided for this service. Letter forwarding If our search is successful the fee for offering to forward a letter is £25.00 including vat. Please note, we are unable to offer our letter forwarding service in cases involving current or former partners where contact could prove disruptive. http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/research/traceline/whatwillitcost.asp Do not pay more than this - you're being robbed. http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/research/traceline/index.asp#0 This site - http://www.traceline*co.uk/ is different. Not sure if it's cosher.

I have used GRO Traceline to find an uncle. I had a form to fill in with every detail I knew. I then wrote a letter to my uncle and enclosed it in an open envelope, with the form. This is so they can check the content, to protect each party. I enclosed a cheque for £50. £25 for the trace and £25 for the letter to be forwarded. These prices relate to five years ago, they could be more now. Once Traceline had traced my uncle they contacted him by letter advising him that I was wishing to contact him. He then had to give them permission to forward my letter on to him. It was then up to my uncle to contact me or not. I had confirmation form Traceline, that my letter had been forwarded to my uncle. At no point was I given my uncles address or details. The process took about a month. Luckily my uncle welcomed me with open arms. I have never been so frightened in my life and the waiting was awful. However I would use Traceline again if needed because everything is done in a sympathic way and care is taken so that the person being traced is protected. If you need any more information please email me. Good luck with your search. Jackie x

I think GRO Traceline charge £30,the £25 for a letter then £20 for the next stage-this is usually when trying to contact a birth relative but they will only pass on details the other way with the other sides consent.

I don't think this can be the GRO Traceline - they most certainly do not give out addresses and I don't think they ever refund any money either! Be careful - I don't know what site this is, but am pretty sure that they will come up with something which will mean you cannot get your £75 back, whether it is right or wrong. OC

are sure you mean GRO traceline? its broken up into 3 parts - and there are boundaries they work within......ie as far as I know after 1939........they are usually used for people trying to trace birth family they havent met and they act as a middle man contact .....the no find no fee thing will only be part of that figure I think......some people can do better for less ,but they do have access to NI records which most do not. also they are not allowed to give out certain addresses incertain circumstances anyway.

Just been on their website and it says you pay £75, no find, no fee. They say they will give you the persons current address as well? Has anybody used them?
