Hi This couple William Ackland and Eliza Hooper either never got married or her name was Louisa, I have the marriage cert. for William Ackland and Louisa Hooper.................................But I find her as Eliza in the census also on childrens birth certificates...............................................I am so confused and can't make my mind up if her name might have been Louisa Margaret x

So on the kids birth certs is she there as Eliza Hooper? If so, then I think may be it was the name she used instead of Louisa. Have you checked to find if there is an Eliza AND Louisa both born and kicking for the right date on the census? If there is only one, I think you can say they are the same person? Have you checked for birth certs for the name? Does she appear as Eliza for the first child born to them and shortly after the marriage?

She may have been known as Eliza. My gran was Emma Ann but her 2nd hubby called her Annie and he registered their childrens births and each time he stated her name as Annie on the certs.

Hi I have been in touch with the records office and they can neither find a birth for Eliza Hooper or Louisa Hooper. I have found a Eliza Hooper in the right area and right time but that says her father was Philip Hooper on her marriage cert. it has a line drawn for father but a Philip Hooper was a witness confusing. On my husbands side his GG Grandmother was down as Agnes on all the census's but was down as Elizabeth Smith Ashworth Nee Briant on G Grandfathers birth cert. But in 1861 down as Agnes Smith but luckly living with her parents O'Brien, I think she used her middle name Agnes as her MIL was living with them she was Elizabeth too. and also this family in 1871 dropped the Smith and went as Ashworth, and luckly lived at same address in 61 and 71 and same address on birth cert Jeanette

However, here is the same family in 1851: before Eliza was born. I suppose its possible, but unlikely her mum would have been 51 when she was born? There is a big gap in ages there between the 16 year old and then Susanna aged 8?? Would they call the 5 year old Elizabeth and then a younger child Eliza? May be Elizabeth died and what was Louisa became Eliza?? Name Age Ann Hooper 16 Elizabeth Hooper 5 Hannah Hooper 2 Mo Henry Hooper 19 Philip Hooper 49 Sarah Hooper 45 Susanna Hooper 8

This Louisa (same district for Tiverton) could be the girl? from freebmd. Im wondering if dad died long before the wedding and when asked Who is your father, she simply replied I dont have one? Could Philip the witness be an older bro? Have you checked when dad and mum died? Have you looked at the 1841 yet to see if an older bro was at home then called Philip? Births Dec 1855 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hooper Louisa Honiton 5b 19 Is this them in 1841? Ann Hooper abt 1833 Devon, England Uffculme Devon Henry Hooper abt 1832 Devon, England Uffculme Devon James Hooper abt 1840 Devon, England Uffculme Devon Margaret Hooper abt 1837 Devon, England Uffculme Devon Philip Hooper abt 1806 Devon, England Uffculme Devon Sarah Hooper abt 1811 Devon, England Uffculme Devon

What is the most annoying bit is no name of father on the marriage cert! I have had a look for Philip Hoopers dying in the area and one sadly fits in nicely for the father but after the marriage! Oh dear.

Hello Heather, yes that is whom I think she is perhaps Philip is her grandfather The Philip Hooper who died 1879 could have been her grandfather. She might just have been called Louisa . The Devon office has the banns of marriage which they are sending to me but what will be on the banns I wonder if the 16year old in the 1851 census is her umarried mother Margaret x

Dont know - hope you find out! I guess 51 is possible for a birth, but I dont know, bit iffy isnt it! 'Dad' must have signed the witness bit then? May be worth spending the £7 on that Louisa birth cert if nothing else comes up.
