<b> Why do people use the word circa before a date

There is a problem with using the word Circa in your family tree data files. It's not standard gedcom, some programs will accept it some will not. I would recommend that you do not use that word, the correct word is About or Abt. If you use the word Circa and you transfer your data into another program by gedcom transfer anytime then there's a good chance that any date with the word Circa against it will be completely ignored by the importing program and the date will not appear at all in the new file. P.A.F. is a good example, it will accept Circa but transfer the P.A.F. gedcom into FTM and all those dates with Circa in them will dissapear. Ron www*genealogyprinters*com

I understand the correct genealogical term should be 'about' - on my FTM program if I put c. a date, it automatically changes to about.

'tis from the Latin - circus, where they had 'merry-go-rounds' and therefore abbreviated to Circa, meaning 'a roundabout'. And if you believe that!!! B :-^)
